Building a Towing-Ready Fleet: A Buyer's Checklist for CURT Gear and Fleet Essentials

I’m the office administrator for a 34-person electrical contractor. I manage all the fleet and shop ordering—hitches, wiring, brake controllers, shop tools, and even the glass cleaner—roughly $180,000 a year across 12 vendors. Before you start: what “towing-ready” actually means

For us, towing-ready means the truck, hitch, trailer brakes, and mirrors are all matched to the heaviest combination your company actually hauls. That’s one of those rules I don’t bend. The marketing person might say “this hitch will work for most fleet trucks,” but I only buy after checking the VIN and the manufacturer’s rating sheet. This is not a substitute for the installer’s manual—it’s the purchasing side of the checklist.

Step 1: Document the maximum load first

Before I put anything in the cart, I get numbers from the team that will use the vehicle. Not the “rated towing capacity” from the brochure—the actual trailer weight when loaded. For our heavy rig, that number is around 17,500 pounds. That’s why we went with the CURT 20K 5th wheel hitch for that truck. Step 4: Give the shop a diagnostic tool that doesn’t require a laptop

Every towing pre-trip turns into a dead stop when the check-engine light is on and the shop doesn’t have a scanner. We put an XTOOL AD20 Pro Bluetooth OBD2 scanner in the main tool bag. It pairs with a mobile app and reads codes and live sensor data. That might sound too techy for an office buyer, but it’s actually the easiest part to justify: drivers can send a screenshot of the code to the mechanic before the truck is even in the bay.

It isn’t a replacement for a real diagnostic session. It just gives you a better pre-trip conversation. If you have multiple locations, buy two. The “one scanner per shop” logic doesn’t work if drivers are not going to walk back to the shop to connect it.

Step 5: Clean the windshield before you check the camera feed

Yes, this is the boring one. But here’s the exact question I get from every new driver: does Clear Vision glass cleaner work? In our experience, yes, with one condition: you have to use the right towel. The product itself removes simple road film and bug residue well. It does not fix a scratched windshield or wiper streaks caused by worn blades.

Now I keep a simple spreadsheet with the VIN, make/model/year, hitch model, brake controller, wiring adapter, camera system, and install date. I also add a photo of the receiver and any adapter.

This spreadsheet has saved me more than once. Last year, someone asked for a “compatible brake controller” for a truck that already had one installed. One glance at the sheet prevented a duplicate order. If you manage more than three vehicles, the sheet is not optional.

Common mistakes I still see buyers make

  • Ordering the highest-rated hitch for every truck. Bigger isn’t safer. The hitch, the truck, and the trailer all have ratings. Match them to the load.
  • Assuming “plug-and-play” wiring works across all years. Vehicle wiring changes. Use the fitment guide, and if a listing says “fits any truck,” ask for evidence—FTC advertising guidelines expect claims to be substantiated.
  • Skipping the mirror upgrade on vans. A towing package usually covers the hitch and wiring, but not blind-spot visibility. That’s why the 3-channel camera ended up on every van, not just the towing rig.
  • Letting the brake controller be optional. If your trailers have electric brakes, the controller is not optional. It’s the difference between stopping and hoping.
  • Forgetting that a clean windshield matters before installing a camera. It sounds silly, but if the windshield film is bad, the best camera feed in the world won’t help.

That’s the checklist. It’s not glamorous, but it works. The goal is to get the right part on the right vehicle, with enough documentation that the next person in your chair doesn’t have to guess. An informed buyer makes the whole fleet safer.
