CURT Towing Gear, Portable Air, and Power: What a Fleet Buyer Actually Chooses

I run procurement for a 28-person towing equipment distributor. I've managed a budget of about $260,000 a year for seven years, negotiated with more vendors than I can count, and tracked every order in our cost system. Scenario C: You're building a roadside kit and want portable air and power

  • Max pressure: at least 90 to 120 PSI for truck and trailer tires.
  • Flow rate: compare CFM at 0 PSI and at 90 PSI. A slow inflator will waste your time.
  • Duty cycle: this is a deal-breaker. A unit rated for 5 minutes on and 10 minutes off can overheat in the middle of a trailer tire in summer. Look for a 30-minute continuous rating.

To be fair, Amazon has some good values. But you have to filter by recent reviews and check the listing date. For a fleet, I would buy through a commercial supplier so there is a clear warranty path when the unit fails.

Also, if you air down tires on purpose, CFM at 0 PSI matters more than peak pressure. A tiny unit rated at 120 PSI can still take forever to refill a 35-inch tire. I would rather have a unit with a real CFM number than a fancy display.

Portable power bank capacity explanation that doesn't overcomplicate it

The number that matters is watt-hours (Wh), not milliamp-hours (mAh). What I mean is, mAh tells you the charge at the battery's internal voltage, but most product pages don't list that voltage, so the comparison is usually wrong.

A 20,000 mAh power bank at 3.7 volts stores about 74 watt-hours (20 Ah x 3.7 V). At 12 volts, that's only about 6.2 Ah. So if you're trying to run a 12V tire inflator that draws 10 amps, that power bank is not going to inflate many tires before it's empty. It's great for phones and small electronics. It's not a replacement for a jump pack or a dedicated 12V battery.

If your goal is jump-starting a truck, look at peak amps and battery type, not mAh. A phone-style bank is not a jump pack. They solve different problems.

  • If the hub is hot, noisy, or overdue for service: Scenario A. Buy the bearing kit first.
  • If the coupler doesn't sit right on the ball: Scenario B. Confirm the ball size and shank before you buy.
  • If the truck already tows fine and you just want to handle a roadside issue: Scenario C. Buy a quality inflator, but don't overbuy the power bank based on mAh alone.

You don't have to replace everything at once. That's not how I manage our budget. Start with the item that prevents the most downtime. If the bearings are good and the ball fits, then go ahead and upgrade the inflator. I still track every order in a spreadsheet, and the data over seven years is clear: prevention costs less than the repair.
