Equipping Our Silverado Fleet for Towing: A Crash Course in Buying Hitches, Tow Bars, and Shop Tools
The call came in on a Tuesday morning.
Our operations manager, Derek, walked over to my desk and said, "We're sending two crews out to the Lubbock site in two weeks. They'll be pulling the new equipment trailers. I need the trucks set up—hitches, wiring, whatever else they'll need."
He pointed at two brand-new Silverado 3500s parked outside. Then he added, "And the trailers are fifth wheel. So figure that out."
I just sat there. I'm the office administrator. I manage purchasing for our company—roughly 60 to 80 orders a year across eight or so vendors. I report to both operations and finance. Nobody had ever asked me about hitches before that Tuesday.
But there was a deadline and a budget, so I did what any self-respecting purchasing person does when facing a knowledge gap: I went home and googled until 11pm.
Learning the Numbers That Matter
If you've never bought a fifth wheel hitch, the first thing you learn is that everything has a rating. The trailer has a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR). The hitch has a gross trailer weight rating (GTWR). And then there's the pin weight—the portion of the trailer's weight that presses down on the bed of the truck.
Our trailers turned out to be around 16,000 lbs loaded. That put us in the range of a 20K hitch. The dealer we work with recommended the CURT 20K fifth wheel hitch, and my first reaction was, "isn't that overkill for a 16K trailer?"
"A hitch rated below your trailer is a cheap way to create an expensive failure. A hitch rated above your trailer is just headroom."

A fifth wheel hitch isn't something you just drop into the truck bed—you need an under-bed mounting kit, and not every truck is pre-drilled the same way. Wait, That's Not the Same as a Tow Bar
The same week, our fleet coordinator asked me a completely different question: "Can you find a tow bar for the older Silverado 1500 we need to move?"
Turns out we needed to relocate that truck across state lines, and the most practical option was flat towing it behind one of our bigger trucks. I did not know what flat towing was. Tools: Where I Got It Wrong Before Getting It Right
Once the hitches were sorted, I started on the shop tools: a floor jack and an impact wrench for each truck. I told myself I had the hang of this.
I found a Pittsburgh 3 ton heavy duty floor jack at a reasonable price. A buddy who runs a shop said it was fine for our needs. "You're not turning wrenches eight hours a day. For tire rotations and brake jobs on a 3500, that's enough." Good. But then I got ambitious and ordered a 3/4" drive impact wrench because I figured bigger was better.
Our fleet mechanic caught me in the shop and asked what the 3/4" was for. I said, "lug nuts."
He laughed. "You planning to change tires on an 18-wheeler? For a Silverado 3500 and a 10,000 lb trailer, a 1/2" drive high-torque impact with 500+ ft-lbs is the best size impact wrench. The 3/4" is heavier, harder to fit into wheel wells, and you'll bust a knuckle trying to hold it. Return that."
So I did. That was the second time in the project I learned the same lesson: the best size isn't the biggest one. It's the one that matches the actual job.
I typed "best size impact wrench for trucks" into my search bar more times than I'd care to admit. The answer was 1/2" for our fleet. It'll probably be 1/2" for yours too, but check what you're actually working on.
Don't Skip the Floor Liners
And then there was the Silverado floor liner situation. Crews were going to climb in and out with muddy boots, chains, and whatever else ends up on a job site. The dealership offered me "all-weather floor mats" that looked like carpet. I called the mechanic and asked if that was fine.
"Those'll slide around and let water through the edges. Get a custom-fit liner that actually snaps in. You'll thank yourself when you trade these trucks in."
I ordered custom-fit Silverado floor liners for both trucks. It's an easy purchase to skip because it doesn't affect towing performance. But it absolutely affects resale value. In my opinion, the brand matters less than the fit. A "universal" mat that you trim yourself sounds like a money-saver until it bunches up under the pedals. That's not a risk worth taking.
The Moment I Almost Missed
Here's the part of this story I'm least proud of, but it's the most important lesson.
The week before the trucks were supposed to leave, I walked past one of them and noticed the white sticker on the driver's door jamb. You know the one—tire pressure, payload ratings, all that small print.
I stopped and actually read it.
The Silverado 3500 had a payload rating of about 4,100 lbs. That sounds like a lot. But that number has to cover the driver, the passenger, the 250-lb hitch, the tools we'd added, and the pin weight of the loaded trailer. I sat down and did the math on the pin weight—somewhere around 3,000 lbs on a 16,000 lb trailer at about 19% pin weight.
We were over.
Not by a catastrophic amount. But over the payload sticker. And the sticker doesn't care about "usually we're under." That sticker is the number that matters to the DOT, to your insurance company, and to anyone's lawyer if something goes wrong. I'd been so fixated on the hitch rating that I almost missed the one number that actually matters most.
I called Derek that afternoon and told him we needed to move a toolbox, chains, and spare parts to a separate vehicle. He wasn't thrilled. But the trucks went out on time, and nothing worse came of it. I got lucky.
What I'd Tell Another Buyer
If you're in charge of buying towing equipment and you don't know the difference between GTWR and pin weight, you're the risk. Here's the short version of what I learned:
- Check the truck's door sticker before you open a catalog. The payload number on that sticker is the ceiling everything else has to fit under.
- A hitch rated above your trailer's loaded weight is headroom, not overkill. We went with the CURT 20K and I have zero regrets about that.
- For flat towing, verify the towed vehicle's weight and the receiver capacity on the tow vehicle. The CURT Rambler worked for us because we checked both.
- For shop tools, buy the size that fits your actual fleet. A Pittsburgh 3 ton floor jack and a 1/2" drive impact wrench were the right sizes for our Silverados.
- Get custom-fit floor liners, and add about 20% to your budget for mounting hardware, wiring, and accessories you didn't think of.
This wasn't my cleanest project as a buyer. I made mistakes, corrected them, and learned a lot in two weeks. But I can tell you this: the rating that matters most is not in the brochure. It's a small white sticker on the doorframe of the truck.
Find that sticker first. Trust me on this one.
