Why I Buy From Specialists, Not One-Stop Shops: A Purchasing Manager’s View
I don’t trust suppliers who say yes to everything. Not anymore. It took a few expensive mistakes to get here.
I manage purchasing for a 14-person independent repair group: about 60-80 orders a year, 8 to 10 vendors, and a budget that isn’t infinite. I report to both operations and finance. When equipment fails, I hear about it from a technician, not from an account manager.
When I took over purchasing in 2021, I thought the opposite. I wanted fewer purchase orders and one vendor to call. One broad supplier said “we can handle all of it.” We ordered radios and a starter diagnostic tool together. The radio had no meaningful IP rating and couldn’t survive a shop floor. Some procurement people would rather keep two or three master vendors and push volumes through them. That works when the products are office supplies or replaceable parts. It doesn’t work as well for tools that affect diagnosis and safety. A failed radio causes a missed communication. A failed code reader causes a misdiagnosis. A misdiagnosis puts a vehicle on a lift too long and makes the customer unhappy.
Since I adopted this approach, our returns on diagnostic electronics have dropped significantly. The purchase orders are smaller, but the ownership cost is lower. I’ll take that trade every time.

Professional boundaries are not weakness. They are predictability. I trust a supplier who says, “this is what we’re good at, and this is where we stop.” That statement is rare, and it keeps me as a customer.
